The
beautiful, unspoilt island of Agistri (or Angistri) is just over
one hour from the Athens port of Piraeus.

For
these reasons, it is sometimes described as the best kept secret
of the Saronic Gulf. The island is an ideal resort for those who
want to avoid the crowds and are looking for a peaceful, relaxing
holiday in a friendly environment. |
For those who prefer a break from sunbathing, Agistri offers beautiful walks in the cooler, pine-forested interior. It is also possible to hire bicycles or mopeds to explore the island. The main beach at Skala is sandy and the gentle slope of the sea bed means that children can swim safely in the shallow waters. The water around Agistri is crystal clear and perfect for snorkelling from the nearby rocks. There is also a more secluded beach just past Rosy's Little Village which is very popular with nudists. Agistri is ideally located for making short visits to other nearby Saronic islands such as Aegina, Poros, Hydra or Spetses. It is also possible to make day trips to see the Acropilis in Athens and special evening boat trips are arranged for performances at the ancient theatre of Epidavros during the summer festival. In the summer, evening cruises are available which go around the island at sunset. Until the 1920s, Agistri was virtually uninhabited and today it has a permanent population of just over a thousand. There are three villages on the island, the largest of which, Skala, is also the main port. Milos lies about 3 km along the coast and the traditional village of Limenaria is some 10km along the coastal road on the other side of the island. Skala has a number of mini-supermarkets, some specialist shops, a bakery and a pharmacist although more sophisticated shopping needs can be met by taking a water taxi to Aegina just a few minutes away. There are numerous tavernas, restaurants and bars and a wide choice of guest houses and hotels. Agistri has a very high rate of return visitors many of whom come
back two or three times a year. There are regular daily ferry and
Flying Dolphin from Piraeus which makes it very easy to access
from Athens. This avoids the need to spend a night in Athens when
arriving or leaving or having to spend a day on a crowded ferry to
reach a more distant island such as those in the Cyclades. |
